KILLARNEY'S first micro-athletic running track is poised to become a reality. The facility, which will feature four lanes and an astro-turf football pitch, is to be built in the grounds of St Brendan's College.

A special fundraising 10-mile road race around Killarney town is to take place on Saturday 23rd of September 2017 (time 9:00am), and is expected to attract a host of elite athletes.

"People of all abilities, elite and recreational athletes, joggers and walkers are invited," said Jerh Griffin of the organising committee.

"We are excited at the prospect of this race being an annual event to support the students and the community in this race as they jointly seek to create a mini style university approach to physical education in a sustainable way," added Jerh.

Race director Alan Ryan, who is a past pupil of St Brendan's, has great experience as he organises many events including the Lakes of Killarney marathon, Hardman triathlon and Kerry Way Ultra Marathon.

the route in brief

Begin in the grounds of the historic St. Brendan's College

Turn right onto Bishop's Path and right onto the New Road (Traffic closed)

Turn left at the Garda Station onto the Rock Road for a 300m gradual incline

Run through the N22 Cleeney Roundabout (Traffic held)
Turn left onto Madam's Hill for a steep 250m before turning left into the Aghadoe road

A gentle incline for .75 mile elevates each runner to the first viewpoint at Aghadoe Heights

Then a quick downhill stretch (.6 miles) past the German Butchers and left with a further downhill of 200 metres to the Gold Nugget Pub

Care required here as Stewards/Safety Marshals facilitate entrance to the Fossa Way and Killarney National park.

Three beautiful miles (relatively flat on the newly tarred pathway past the Castlerosse, Knockreer Pitches and Playground brings the runner to Dennagh Cottage)

Turn right up the steep incline past Killarney House to Cnoc na R and the 2nd the Park

Gradual downhill and left through the Parkland

Turn right at the cattle grid and left at the Queen's Bridge
Follow the Deenagh River path

Over the King's Bridge onto the public road at Cathedral place

Turn left onto the Bishop's path, past the Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace

Turn right through the gates into the grounds of St. Brendan's

Complete the final 250m on the footprint of our proposed Track Development (10 mls)

The winner's trophy is named in honour of Richard Clifford a well-known and much loved Killarney sportsman and athlete who was taken from this life much too soon. This great love of sports was passed on to Richard from his own father Con and will live on through Richard's own children. Richard's son Risteard recently captained the St. Brendan's cross country team to win the Munster colleges cross country championship, the first time a Kerry school had achieved this honour.
